We worked on tuning up some notes that tend to be out of tune, like 4th finger E and the Eb and Bb in the key of G minor. We also did our instrument tuning using 5ths instead of just matching the open strings. We also worked on phrasing for Scottish Journey and Japanese Lullaby, and we used the talking metronome on Toccatina to keep us from rushing. We worked on making our accents better in Scottish Journey, and in our small groups we added two new bow exercises: windshield wipers and rolling the stick of the bow. We worked on dynamics for Galena, and the first violins had to out play Mrs. B on the loud dynamics in Scottish Journey.

-We worked on vibrato. It was hard. Some people feel they are getting better. Some don’t.
-There is a cartoon on the board of 3 mice playing the violin and two have patches on their eyes. We created captions for the cartoon last week and voted on our favorite captions this week. We ranked them 1-5 (1 being your favorite and 5 being least favorite)
-We worked on accents in A Scottish Journey because we weren’t playing the accents very well.
-We learned some new bowing exercises!!! The new ones were wind shield wipers and rolling the bow, and reviewed rocket ship with life savers
-When we rehearsed Toccatina, we used the talking metronome to help us keep from slowing down.
- We practiced phrasing in A Scottish Journey and Japanese Lullaby.

Ethan – Last week we worked on phrasing in Japanese Lullaby. We played on a faster tempo for Galena-Milwaukee Breakdown. We used slurs often in warm up and in Galena.
Zack – My favorite thing that we did last week was doing the rocketship bows with lifesavers. It was so fun ’cause the rockets were like pshewwwww and lifesavers tasted gooooood.
Lucas – I have learned and mastered vibrato, and I think I have it down pretty well. I also worked on the dynamics too. It was a productive week.
DJ- I’ve learned a lot about accents and I’ve learned how to do dynamics like f and p and crescendo and decrescendo

This week we learned how to play Arkansas Traveler faster and violins learned measure 69. We also learned the last section of Ahlan Sabaya Alfarah with the Bartok snap, playing behind the bridge and tapping on our instruments. In Riding the Rails we practiced using the D.S. al Coda and started getting used to it. In our lesson group we did the rocket ship bow exercise with lifesavers ®. It was really fun we got to eat them at the end of the lesson. This week was really fun, we learned a lot and broke the wellness policy eating candy!☺

In orchestra this week the first violin’s got better at a harmonics. We played Galena Milwaukee Breakdown, Toccatina, and Japanese Lullaby. We worked hard on dynamics, rhythm, and vibrato. She made sure that our notes were in tune so that when we played we didn’t sound weird. The first violins learned how to get to second position on time. And that it is like getting a brain transplant. Cellos perfected their vibrato. Also they worked on 2nd position in Toccatina. They worked on their timings on Scottish Journey. We all got better on listening to the whole orchestra. But we still need to work on being quiet and listening when we need to. But we are getting better on not playing when we are supposed to. In small groups we worked on bowing exercises, and how to move your wrist properly. Also we worked on playing phrases in Scottish Journey and counting the beats.

Over the last week we have learned many things; things that will help us to grow as orchestra members. We learned how to do the stick game to Sansa Kroma. Some of us learned to play percussion instruments. We learned vibrato in our small group lessons, thanks to Mrs. Buehl. Listening to “Viva la Vida” on Wednesday was fun. We listened to hear the ostinato patterns. We also made it all the way through Arkansas Traveler without stopping. We all had fun this week and hope we get loads better at our songs!

In Last week’s amazing orchestra class, we covered many topics. We spent some splendid moments on the amazing topic of G minor. We learned the mystical value of two flats in the key signature, which indicate the phenomena of E and B flat.
We also used our hammer, anvil, and stirrup bones in our ears to process the magnificent song of “Viva la Vida” composed by the infamous Coldplay. This song featured an Ostinato pattern that enlightened us with highly educational information.
The often overlooked accents in Galena Milwaukee Breakdown were touched on once upon a time. They bring a truly ingenious sound into the high-energy song. It is a wonderful addition to a highly enjoyable piece. Of course, we need to work on perfecting this astounding occurrence, because the accents are most often off the beat.
We have also been focusing on vibrato. It’s a difficult technique to master, though many of us have goals to learn it within the next few years.
We have developed this astonishing anecdote about the marvelous week and memories we obtained through the marvelous class that we entitle ‘orchestra.’

Hi this week we learned about “mysterious” bow bugs! Bow bugs are bugs that live in your case and eat your bow hair!! You can’t see them on your bow but you can see the sheddings of the bugs in your case. Bow bugs like instrument cases that aren’t opened for long periods of time. But don’t worry because you can get rid of them with camphor cakes and rosemary, and vacuuming out your case. Put your case out in sunlight. Bow bugs don’t like sunlight, they like dark places.

We learned how to play Japanese Lullaby with the right notes and right dynamics. We also got better at Galena Milwaukee Breakdown. Violin 1 did some work in second position.. Next, we played the song Toccatina faster and got the dynamics to almost perfect. We also learned three new words on the world wall which were subito, col legno, and soli. We also got better at our vibrato by practicing once or twice. Then we worked on A Scottish Journey which we got better and knew more about. Next, we did some scales which were C major, E minor, A minor, and G major. In our lessons we practiced bow hold, sitting position and vibrato. Another day we worked on Japanese Lullaby and got through the whole song. Finally, we worked on some dynamics, F sharp, F natural, E flat, B flat. So that is some of the things we learned last week.

We are currently playing Japanese Lullaby being conducted by Ms. James our new student teacher. This piece is pensive which we learned means dreamy. We are also playing A Scottish Journey by Miriam Overholt. In this piece we are using col legno, which is where you play the notes with the wood of the bow instead of the hair. Another song that we are playing is Galena Milwaukee Breakdown by Catherine McMichael. This piece includes a syncopated rhythm in all the sections. A syncopated rhythm is where the emphasis doesn’t always lie on the beat. The last piece we have learned so far is Toccatina by William Hofeldt. This piece includes suspensions which means there is tension in the notes. Suspension is located in the violins part. These are pieces that we are learning for our first concert on November 25th.
