We worked on tuning by fifths in our small group lessons; we also worked on accents in Scottish Journey. We worked on bow exercises and vibrato in our small group lessons.
In large group, we also worked on accents in Scottish Journey. Mrs. Buehl decided that we would play Galena Milwaukee Breakdown at the next concert in February.
In Scottish Journey we worked on pizzicato and in Japanese Lullaby we worked on phrasing and dynamics.
In Toccatina we worked on subito dynamics and the tempo.
This week Mrs. Buehl told us that she entered us into Capitol Concert and we would play a concert at the state capitol.

This week in orchestra:
We practiced tuning in fifths in small group and as a large group.
We continued to keep working on accents in A Scottish Journey.
We used subito dynamics in Toccatina and Mrs. Buehl stressed the importance of them. We slightly improved.
We have 8 rehearsals left until our concert; the band/orchestra students only have four. Oh dear!
The orchestra decided to drop Galena-Milwaukee Breakdown so we could focus on our other songs. This way they can be played at a more advanced level.
Mrs. Buehl also proposed that we perform in the Capital Rotunda in March during ‘Music in Our Schools Month’.
She imposed the punishment of standing up for the remainder of class if you are found playing with poor posture.
Advice from the cellists: “Don’t stop your half notes too early!!”
Ms. James taught us to divide our bows into 8 and then 16 parts to make the best use of the bow.

This week we started learning how to tune with our pegs. We also learned how to play Arkansas Traveler in cut time. We also worked on our bow holds. The violins worked on four different bow hold drills. We made our goals for the second quarter and said how we did on our first quarter goals. Every day we’re getting better and better as our concert is coming up soon!!!!!

We worked on tuning up some notes that tend to be out of tune, like 4th finger E and the Eb and Bb in the key of G minor. We also did our instrument tuning using 5ths instead of just matching the open strings. We also worked on phrasing for Scottish Journey and Japanese Lullaby, and we used the talking metronome on Toccatina to keep us from rushing. We worked on making our accents better in Scottish Journey, and in our small groups we added two new bow exercises: windshield wipers and rolling the stick of the bow. We worked on dynamics for Galena, and the first violins had to out play Mrs. B on the loud dynamics in Scottish Journey.

-We worked on vibrato. It was hard. Some people feel they are getting better. Some don’t.
-There is a cartoon on the board of 3 mice playing the violin and two have patches on their eyes. We created captions for the cartoon last week and voted on our favorite captions this week. We ranked them 1-5 (1 being your favorite and 5 being least favorite)
-We worked on accents in A Scottish Journey because we weren’t playing the accents very well.
-We learned some new bowing exercises!!! The new ones were wind shield wipers and rolling the bow, and reviewed rocket ship with life savers
-When we rehearsed Toccatina, we used the talking metronome to help us keep from slowing down.
- We practiced phrasing in A Scottish Journey and Japanese Lullaby.

♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ What we did last week was brainstorming on phrasing for Japanese Lullaby and we did some Vibrato exercises. On Thursday we had mixed seating. Another exercise we did was the rocket ship with the lifesavers. We also want to do a faster tempo on Galena-Milwaukee Breakdown. Ms. James had us do a mystery warm-up. We’re playing at a slower tempo for Toccatina for getting better intonation on the flats. ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪♫♪♫♪♫♥
